Being a nurse is the most in demand out of the country job right now; however other countries like Saudi Arabia wants to accommodate their local applicants first. But according to the survey, 80% of Saudi men and women prefer to be treated by Filipinos since they are gentler especially when handling pregnancy cases. So Japan opens their doors for Filipinos to work as a nurse in their country. This is a good opportunity to start the same work in a different country.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has announced that Japan needs 500 nurses from the Philippines. The said proposal is under the present Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA). Nurses who would pass the qualifications shall be employed as an assistant and can be fully accepted as registered nurses after passing the local licensure examination. For those successful ones, they are expected to get ¥200,000, or approximately Php 100,000.

POEA will examine the job applicants starting November. The qualifications are as follow; should be a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing at any reputable schools nationwide, must be a Philippine’s nursing board exam passer, at least 3 years practice of working in a hospital and should be physically and mentally fit. All interested applicants can submit their application online.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has recently approved their Saudization or Nitagat Policy. This is their solution for the increasing number of unemployed Arab citizens. The Nitagat Policy requires their local companies to hire their fellow countrymen instead of expatriats. The regulation is classified into several categories depending on their performance in hiring Saudis. The Red and Yellow categories are prevented from renewing work visas of their foreign workers thus forcing these firms to terminate their expatriats and hire their locals within 9 to 11 months. The Green category on the other hand, is allowed to choose and sponsor visas of foreign workers from the red and yellow categories without approval from their employers.

Although the government said that this policy excempts foreign professionals such as doctors, nurses and engineers, these occupations are still at risks because of the incentives, such as government contracts, that the Kingdom of Saudi Aarabia will be giving out to those firms who will have good compliance rate on the Nitagat policy.

Presently, there are thousands foreign nurses working in the Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia. And still, there is an increasing demand of foreign nurses in their country. However, there are reported cases of foreign nurses who have been terminated after the Nitagat policy took effect. Migrante-Middle East reported to have 6 confirmed Filipino nurses who have lost their jobs due to Saudization.

As of now, the KSA is in need of 50,000 to 60,000 foreign nurses for the coming 6 months. But despite these numbers, foreign nurses are now in a limbo of the permanency of their employment due to this unexpected regulation.

It is quite unfortunate that the ratio of children having developmental disorders are now increasing in number worldwide. This situation has brought about an emergence of one area of nursing which is equally interesting and fulfilling. Developmental Disability Nurses are now hunted in the United States, Canada and even by employers in Australia whose embassy have just announced to stop their recruitment of foreign nurses until 2013.

Intellectual and Developmental Disability Nurses (I/DDN) are also referred to as Special Needs or Mental Retardation Nurses. They provide care, as the name speaks, for Special Children. Special Children are children diagnosed to have Autism Spectrum Disorders, Rett’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disordder (PDD), Mental Retardation or Learning Disabilities, Epilepsy and many more.

These conditions are idiophatic by etiology but are said to be linked with incompatible genes and environmental/chemical hazards during pregnancy. DDNs work hand in hand with developmental pediatricians, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and special education teachers in a goal to help special children become as functional and independent as possible.

Together with the family, these professionals aid special children to achieve their maximum potentials. Hence, Special Needs Nurses can work in hospitals, clinics, schools/daycare, and long-term community facilities.

To become a Registered Developmental Disability Nurse, one must gain Certification in Developmental Disability Nursing (CDDN) with the following requirements:
Work certificate or documents proving 4000 hours or an equivalent of 2 years full-time work experience in a developmental disabilities nursing practice completed within the last five years;
Pass a written examination;

This certification is valid for two years and can be recertified by taking another exam. This Certification in Developmental Disability Nursing (CDNN) is accredited by the Developmental Disability Nurses Association (DDNA).

If you are one of those nurses in the Philippines who are planning to seek a nursing job in Australia, this is somewhat a bad news. You need to wait for at least two years before your application to be approved.

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith recently visited Cebu City and explained why such thing is happening. He stated that this is all due to a consolidation movement of Australia’s public healthcare sector. “From now until 2013 there will be no significant demand for nurses outside of Australia,” he said. He also stated that at present, there are at least 250,000 Filipinos working and living in their country and majority of them are working as nurses and other professions of the medical field.

However, the Ambassador didn’t mention in his statement if the current employment of the Filipino nurses in Australia would be affected. Moreover, he stressed out that that the employment demand for accountants, engineers, IT (Information Technology) experts in Australia will continue to grow over the next few years.

This decrease in the demand of nurses was also noted by Philippine Nursing Association president Leah Samaco-Paquiz. She particularly cited countries like USA and Australia. She also mentioned that majority of the nurses in the country are underemployed and unemployed because of these changes of policies and visa retrogression of destination countries.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) is now encouraging the nurses to apply to other countries aside from the USA and Australia like Saudi Arabia (KSA). The latter is still in need 10,000 nurses for their public hospitals and are specifically eyeing Filipino nurses to fill the vacancies.
