Get Into Travel Nursing by Starting in the U.S.
What is Travel Nursing?
In the simplest of terms, “travel nursing” means that you are travelling to different locations in or out of your primary country of residence for the purpose of securing a short-term, temporary nursing position at different medical facilities. Today, there are a number of staffing agencies that target this type of employment and offer certain incentives to men and women who are willing to work in this fashion.
The Benefits of Travel Nursing in the U.S.
Compensation factors are the key benefit to travel nursing jobs. For the most part, you receive some great benefits when you land any travel nursing jobs. These are often better than nursing jobs that are full-time and permanent positions. It is not uncommon to see any of the following compensation benefits with most jobs of a travelling nature:
- Guaranteed compensation and more of it – travel nurse jobs typically pay better in most
circumstances than full-time, permanent nursing positions. Additionally, the rate of take home pay is usually higher. - Referral bonuses – since referrals of experienced individuals tend to strengthen the travel nursing industry, many staffing companies look for positions that afford referral bonuses when they are looking to add to their nursing staff.
- Completion and sign-on bonuses – another benefit of travel nursing jobs is that they offer these types of bonuses that can often equate to around an additional £4,000 ($6,000 USD).
- Experience and building your resume – experience speaks volumes in the travel nursing industry. So if you want to pursue international travel nurse jobs, the U.S. is a great starting place.
Ways of Getting Into International Travel Nursing
If you are already in the nursing industry and you want to see the world, travel nursing jobs are the perfect way for you to achieve your goals. International travel nursing has become a big industry in the past decade and the demand for travelling nurses increases every year. There are four things to take into account to get into international travel nursing:
- Education and experience – if you do not have an undergraduate nursing degree, this is your starting point. If you do have a nursing degree, you will need to work for two to three years as a registered nurse in a clinic or hospital before you can apply for any travel nurse jobs.
- If you have the above under your belt, start applying at a number of international travel nursing
staffing companies – a valid form of ID will be required along with other documentation as requested by the nursing company. - Geographic location you are interested in – travel nursing jobs last anywhere from 30 days to 12 months, so you need to choose the location where you want to work wisely.
- Interview in person, online or on the phone – staffing recruiters will always be available to interview you if you have the qualities they are looking for within a specific job and location.
Possible Wage Comparison
Salaries or wages will vary from one location to the next whether domestic or international. Depending on the country’s currency, the wages you receive could more than compensate you for your efforts. As an example, travel nurse jobs in the U.S. will typically pay up to 15% more than full-time, permanent positions. Depending on the country you work in, your income could be tax free meaning that you would bring home more wages every pay period.
