Hawaii Cuts Off Nursing Jobs

08 December 2010 » In United States »

Nursing graduates nowadays has been always dreaming to get a nursing job immediately. Sad to say, there isn’t much vacancy of nursing jobs lately. Local hospitals has been cost cutting due to economic crisis. One way of doing it is cutting off the hiring new employees and it includes nurses. Worst scenario might even reach to ending the contracts of their current employees.

If before Hawaii has shortage of nurses, right now it’s the other way around. They are experiencing oversupply of nurses wherein even to their local graduates they can’t provide enough nursing jobs. This is not unusual though as other states in US also experience the same. This is due to the continued recession in the country. Nurses whose spouses lose their jobs due to recession withdrew their resignation to compensate the loss in the family’s income.

In fact, the turn over rate of nurses at Hawaii Pacific Health dropped to 4% from 18% three years ago. Hawaii Pacific Health the state is the largest health care system which is employing nearly 1,600 nurses. This is according to Gail Lerch, RN, HPH’s executive vice president. The Hawaii Medical Center have reduced beds thus further diminishing nursing jobs.

Sad thing that this is happening. The large supply of nurses is now adding up to the growing unemployment rate. Although this has been predicted, this phenomenon is indeed a serious challenge.
